    SoulSinging August Survey

Since March, SoulSinging has made a number of "pivots" with various ways of continuing our class experience.

Part 1 of this survey is to gain your feedback about the class experience from March - August of this year.

Part 2 of this survey is to gauge your interest in various formats of SoulSinging in September and moving forward.

Any feedback you have, large or small, is INCREDIBLY valuable to me as I create the structures for our class.

Part 2: September and Moving Forward
As classes resume in September, we have a few options to consider about the best way to continue meeting.  This is largely a choice about online vs. in person, or some hybrid of the two options.

It is particularly important to consider the safety of meeting and singing together in person.  I think most of us generally prefer the in-person experience when singing together because of the ability to hear one another and combine our voices in this way.  However, singing is a "higher risk" activity than others because of the way we breathe and project our voices while singing.  Given the evolving science about COVID-19, it important to consider these factors.

In early August, the University of Colorado Boulder released a study about the effect of aerosol spread when making music.  These preliminary results shed some light on what is the safest approach to singing together during this time.  You can read the results of this study here.

Here is one image from the study:

As you can see, the impact of a well-fitted mask on the singer was BIG, akin to sitting and breathing.

Here is another image from the study, measuring the amount of aerosol collection around the singer over time:

    Picture

Once again, the impact of a well-fitted mask is BIG.  The cloud around the singer after 1 hour of singing WITH a mask is smaller than the cloud from 10 minutes WITHOUT a mask.

The 5 major recommendations for in-person singing from the study include:

    1. Maintain at least 6 feet of distance from one another
    2. Wear a mask that fits well (no gaps on the sides or top, nose inside the mask, multiple layers of fabric)
    3. Meet outdoors when possible, but indoors with good ventilation and air filtration
    4. Wash hands and avoid touching surfaces
    5. Limit the length of the rehearsal, with breaks in the room between rehearsals for ventilation

However, even with these recommendations, meeting in person is never 100% safe during this pandemic.  COVID-19 cases continue to rise and we are still facing this crisis in our community.  Meeting in person in any form assumes some level of risk for all people involved.

Given this data, here are 3 options for SoulSinging classes this fall:
    Option 1: In Person Classes
    1. Classes meet weekly at Resound NW following the 5 recommendations listed above
    2. Up to 12 people in class at a time for 1 hour

    3. All participants must be able to answer health questions (same questions as outdoor classes)
    4. Classes livestreamed via Zoom for those who cannot (or choose not to) attend in person
Option 2: Hybrid of In Person and Online Classes
    1. Classes meet weekly via Zoom
    2. A smaller number of people rotate attending class in person at Resound NW (possibly 6 at a time) following the 5 recommendations listed above

    3. Occasional classes are scheduled to meet all together outdoors (e.g. a picnic shelter)
    4. Class creates occasional Virtual Choir recordings and receives weekly videos via Youtube
    Option 3: Online Classes
    1. Classes meet weekly exclusively via Zoom
    2. Class creates frequent Virtual Choir recordings and similar collaborative digital projects
    3. Class receives weekly videos via Youtube
    4. Participants receive the option of individualized feedback and solo singing opportunities within the class experience (in addition to group singing)
