Ty Chiko, Voice Teacher
Ty Chiko believes that everyone should sing and find their own authentic voice to express who they are. As a performer, Ty is especially passionate about collaborating with other artists of multiple disciplines. He is excited to be teaching in the studio at Resound NW!
Originally from the Islands of the Bahamas, Ty has been singing his whole life as well as playing piano, guitar, and ukulele. He holds a Masters Degree in Music Performance from the University of New Mexico and is completing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice Performance and Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University.
Ty is the recipient of numerous awards, including as one of fifteen finalists for the prestigious Lotte Lenya Vocal Competition, through the Kurt Weill Foundation. He has been celebrated as one of the Bahamas’ Top 40 Under 40. He is also one of the 2021 Arizona State University Concerto Competition Winners and a 2022 recipient of the Artist Opportunity Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
In the fall of 2022, Ty played the role of Edward Cannady in the world premiere of Beatrice at the Portland Opera. In addition to his musical performances, he has been featured twice on National Public Radio KJZZ and has appeared on other podcasts and radio shows. He was a part of a music film project with State Farm Insurance that highlighted NBA superstar and fellow Bahamian, DeAndre Ayton.
Ty is passionate about youth advocacy. He is a Certified Peer Visitor and volunteers yearly for the Amputee Coalition of America as a Summer Camp Counselor. He is also the host of a brand new and engaging podcast, This Abled Body, a show that celebrates youth living with limb loss and limb difference.
